National Poetry Month: Youth of the World

As you are all probably aware, April is National Poetry Month. I am not very good at writing poetry, but I thought I might take a stab at writing a bit of it anyway. You can’t get better unless you practice!

I did a quick Google search (ever an astute librarian, I tell you!) and this was the first one I found: http://www.agodon.com/uploads/2/9/4/3/2943768/writing_prompts_by_kelli_russell_agodon.pdf

If we start with Prompt #1 it states: “Grab the closest book. Open it to page 29. Write down 10 words that catch your eye. Use 7 of them in a poem.” There’s a bit about extra credit, but as I’ve said, poetry isn’t my strong suit. SO we’re just going to go with the bare minimum here...

Book Title: Easy Hiragana by Fujihiko Kaneda (My fiancé is learning Japanese).

List of words (there are exactly 10): cough, youth, world, sleep, elder sister, fever, dog, separation, eye, we

Poem:

The Youth of the World

The youth of the world
May sleep away the separation fever
Caused by a lack of your embrace.
But I, the eye of the dog,
Cough and shudder when we are not near,
As I am nothing more than the Elder Sister.

*-*-*-*

Ehhh... I guess that wasn’t too bad…? (Annnd maybe I can't handle the bare minimum because I managed to use all 10 words? Oops!)

Can you do better? Create a poem using the same words OR pull out your own book, turn to page 29, and pick the first 10 words that jump out at you. Leave me your poem in the comments below!

  1. Happy National Poetry Month! Loved the link you sent. I was going to try it out, but since you challenged me… Let’s see. I’m reading Eldest by Christopher Paolini now (part of the Eragon Series). The words on pg. 29 that stood out to me were: survived, childhood, home, long, dandelions, farm, barn, sunset, trembling, future
    Alright, here it goes!

    Childhood
    The sunset of childhood
its home long lost to the past
    stretches outward and onward.
    Its dandelion light,
    survived by the past,
    fades long into the future.

Not sure if it worked, but ta-da!
